VIA 2016 Audio Artists

ESG

FRI. OCT 07 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9pm-2am
Even if you don't think you know ESG, you know ESG. One of the most influential post-punk bands of all time, VIA will be ESG's Pittsburgh andPennsylvania debut. Combining pop, punk, funk and new wave, the Scroggins sisters are legends who have deeply influenced music of every genre over the last 3 decades. Cult hits like "UFO" are one of the most sampled songs in history (over 400 times) by the likes of Miles Davis, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Liars, and MF Doom. To put that in perspective, James Brown's "Hey" has been sampled a little over 200 times.

RAKIM

SAT. OCT 08 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9pm-2am
Performing album "Paid in Full" in full. Eric B. & Rakim's debut record marked a sea change in hip hop’s evolution. Leading a musical revolution that gave artists the courage to put forth philosophical, theological, and social concerns on wax, Rakim changed the way rappers could flow and helped secure East Coast hip hop's reputation for innovative lyrical technique.

BEN UFO

SUN. OCT 09. - ACE HOTEL PATIO - 1PM-8PM - Presented with The Weekend Send
London-based Ben UFO is simply one of the most exciting DJs around. His brand of genre-defying sets have become the gold standard for forward-thinking clubgoers. While originally making his name as a dubstep, house and garage DJ, Ben has built up a reputation for his experimental tendencies and broad variety in his sets, most clearly seen during the weekly Hessle Audio radio show. He's co-founder of the record label Hessle Audio, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea.

EMPRESS OF

FRIDAY, OCT 7 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-2AM
At 25 years old, the Honduran-American artist Lorely Rodriguez has single handedly written, produced, and recorded 3 masterful electronic pop albums that discuss togetherness, solitude, catcalling, privilege, and ultimately, personal independence. Releases like Systemsfound Rodriguez acknowledging her identity as first generation - uniting a desire to belong while still acknowledging her roots in a Spanish-speaking culture. “It’s really important to me to connect with my roots, even in the really simple way of language."

JUNGLEPUSSY

SAT. OCT 08 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-2AM
Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj and Lil' Kim approved - the Brooklyn-based rapper garnered serious buzz in 2014 with her first mixtape, Satisfaction Guaranteed. Her 2016 full-length, Pregnant With Success, is a plush 10-track collection asserting the importance of loving yourself. The record is an ode to her mother, to all mothers, and “to anyone who’s ever waited patiently for something to come into fruition.” Her distinct unhurried flow undulates over subdued beats deployed by Shy Guy, a producer who’s worked with Joey Bada$$ and Le1f. JP's particularly on point when calling out her haters: On “Nothing For Me” she disses a guy’s half-assed attempts to impress her, while on “Pop For You” picks apart “ungrateful motherfuckers / soul suckers,” men whose sexual attraction is swayed by color.

MIDLAND

FRI. OCT 07. - HOT MASS - 12AM-6AM - Detour Showcase
Charting a vast course from ambient, soul and world music to storming (but always elegant) club sounds,  Midland has been a chameleonic talent, a producer of surreal club cuts as well as modern pop songs.  Flirting with techno, disco and the sounds of his native UK, Midland has set himself apart with sets as classy as they are utterly party rocking. Aboard boat parties on the Adriatic or regular slots at clubs like Berlin's Panorama Bar or London’s Fabric, he's given countless unforgettable moments to innumerable people around the world.

JULIANA HUXTABLE

SAT. OCT 08. - ACE HOTEL BALLROOM - 9PM-2AM - Shock Value showcase
"Juliana's voice is integral in this time, because she truly is a beacon of hope. She exists at the crux of almost every type of intersectionality, but still thrives” - Kimberly Drew, Black Contemporary Art. Juliana is a DJ/producer, writer, model, and trans activist who is also the co-founder of NYC queer party Shock Value. She has exhibited and performed at museums and festivals around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA NYC & Los Angeles, White Columns, Frieze Projects, and a highly acclaimed collaboration with sculptor Frank Benson for the 2015 New Museum Triennial.

CHINO AMOBI

THU. OCT 06 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-12AM - Presented with Experimedia
Co-founder of NON, the politically minded collective and record label dedicated to music being created by African artists and the diaspora, Chino Amobi was born in Alabama to Nigerian immigrant parents. He makes distorted, noise-laden electronic music that frequently references and subverts pop culture.  His 2015 debut EP, Anya’s Garden, surfaced via the UNO NYC label, but it’s Amobi’s work with NON – which he runs alongside London’s Nkisi and Cape Town’s Angel-Ho – that has garnered most of the attention for their web-savvy approach, experimental sound, international membership and outspoken politics have found an audience, giving a voice to like-minded children of the diaspora around the globe.

RABIT

THU. OCT 06 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-12AM - Presented with Experimedia
Houston-based producer emerged in 2014 with his debut album Communion on Tri Angle Records, with a dark and depth-laden catalog “inspired by issues relating to sexuality, gender, ownership of our natural bodies”. Playing alongside the likes of Bjork (an avid supporter of Tri Angle) and artists who continually push the boundaries of club music’s formal and social qualities, Rabit’s distopic club sound move fluidly between the personal and political, striving to sonically address “societal and governmental injustices, and media manipulations,” and sees the producer’s singular sound run “the full gamut of emotions”.

LEE BANNON

SAT. OCT 08 - ACE HOTEL BALLROOM - 9PM-2AM - Shock Value showcasea

AKA Dedekind Cut, the artist has a way of thwarting any confines or expectations by treating his artistic aliases as projects. Moving towards "the furthest thing from any R&B or hip-hop" he's come a long way from his days as part of Joey Bada$$'s Pro Era crew, taking on a much darker, experimental avant-garde tone. Dissonant breakcore, doom-mongering, abstract sonics.

NEGATIVE GEMINI

FRI. OCT 07 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-2AM
Future-future-pop star, the Virginia native makes a genre-spanning blend of ’90s techno and heady modern electronica: a little Chicago, a little Detroit, and a whole lot of Brooklyn. But unlike many of her contemporaries, Negative Gemini conveys her personality and experiences through vocals and lyrics, not just tight production.

AYE NAKO

SAT. OCT 08 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 3PM-5PM - Women In Sound showcasea
A queer punk band comprised of 4 weirdos writing dissonant and melodic punk music while carving out a space to co-exist in the fold between music, art, and politics in New York City and beyond. 2015’s The Blackest Eye, released on Don Giovanni Records, saw the band explore personal themes such as abuse and racism to critical acclaim, ending up on several best of lists including both the New York Times and NPR and being voted best garage band in New York in the Village voice. Originally formed to subdue boredom but now operating on another frequency, they are actively seeking a planet where those who fall in the margins can feel OK about being themselves.

ERIS DREW

SAT. OCT 08 - HOT MASS - 12AM-6AM - Humanaut showcase
Eris Drew is a DJ and musician from the Prairie State- her one woman pulsing synth acts her personal trans femme travel log. She's played at Hugo Ball (Smart Bar), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and at Lost in Music for Interdimensional Transmissions (Detroit).  Eris's vibe is heavy on what she calls "the Mother Beat." - an engagement with the energetic pulses found in early rock n' roll and various other spiritual/body musics from the 20th Century. Her shows feature an extensive kit comprised of performance synths, electric drums, pedals, and other noise making devices.

LADYMONIX

FRI. OCT 07 - HOT MASS - 12AM-6AM - Detour showcase
Detroit-based LadyMonix isn’t afraid to sonically travel from one end of the music spectrum to the other. She grew up listening to everything from Baltimore House to Green Day, leaving no vinyl untouched in between. Today, she is most well known for her funk, disco, and deep house sets.

FIELDED

SAT. OCT 08 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 3PM-5PM - Women In Sound showcase
Brooklyn-based vocalist, songwriter and composer, Fielded works at creating a genre-less instrumental backdrop for the movement of her voice – a penetrating and sensual tool in which she explores fearlessly and innovatively. She refers to her sound as 'post-apocalyptic pop', a title that is all too fitting as it seems as though her songs have been written as part of some future film laced with battle cries, lovemaking and outer limit abductions.

Xuan Rong

THU. OCT 06 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-12AM - Presented with Experimedia
Xuan Rong, stage name of NYC native Rachel Katz, combines ethereal vocals and mechanical beats to create lof-fi electronic sound reminiscent of Arca or FKA Twigs. Her eclectic brand ranges from manic sugar pop pieces to dreamy R&B works. Her music brims with textures that complement each other, layered with emotions juxtaposed in ways that are startling, unexpected, and many times bewildering. Underneath the synth and bass lies a unique voice that is modern, strong, sensual, and vulnerable all at once.

FEE LION

FRI. OCT 07 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-2AM
“A one-woman electric dream-machine” ... "cyber depression pop”. More than just a singer-songwriter, Fee Lion’s music encompasses a breadth of layers and instrumentation that gets free of the stigmatization of a label. Like the art-pop and synth performers who came before her, such as Julia Holter and Holly Herndon. In short, she's working with more than just a guitar and her lyrics.

ANTHONY DICAP

FRI. OCT 07 - 9PM-2AM - ACE HOTEL BALLROOM - SHOCK VALUE showcase
A native of Long Island, NY, Anthony DiCap taught himself how to DJ at home on his computer, creating the one-of-a-kind mixes he'd always wanted to dance to. Now, after DJing at parties all over New York's gay-club circuit (Westgay, LadyFag, MASSIVE, Shock Value), Anthony DiCap is a sought-after artist with producer aspirations.

ABBY

SAT. OCT 08 - 9pm-2am - ACE HOTEL BALLROOM - SHOCK VALUE showcase
“My mom saw nine inch nails live while she was pregnant with me I think it explains a lot” The Detroit-bred, alien-loving DJ Abby Fiscus on the next big thing

SETH GRAHAM

THU. OCT 06 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-12AM - presented with Experimedia
On his latest release, Seth Graham plays to the rafters, saturating his compositions with an operatic gravity — skitteringly combining the powers of Wagner and Robert Ashley. The Orange Milk co-proprietor's ongoing audio experiments make extensive use of chopped vocal minutia, stacks of chants overlapping his characteristic non-structure. An elaborate exploration of tropes imbued with a persistent sense of emotion and drama.

GHOST COP

FRI. OCT 07 - ACE HOTEL GYM - 9PM-2AM
GHOST COP (Lucy Swope and Sean Dack) think the dystopia you dreamt of in the celluloid past is upon us. They find clanging resonances in the alleys of the mind. They want to hang with Egyptian Lover and his 808. They've internalized the fiction of William Gibson. They appreciate lesser loved drum machines. Are proponents of hardware based digital synthesis.

This series intends to shine light on artistic identity and creative labor. These musicians represent different generations of women who have pushed the boundaries of their field, as well as inspired a space (physical & psychic) for the creation of new creative paradigms & communities.

DANIELLE MAGGIO (PhD U. Pitt Ethnomusicology) will present on Betty Davis, a pioneer and oft-erased voice in the formation of jazz/rock fusion. ESG is a seminal post-punk band comprised of women of color who single handedly dismantled and rebuilt a genre - influencing countless generations of artists - and inspiring over 400 samples (that's more than James Brown). JULIANA HUXTABLE has deftly situated herself to raise visibility and voice for trans women of color across fashion, fine art, DJ/night life culture. Her party Shock Value has been a flagship event in NYC. AYE NAKO inserts queer and brown identity into punk for today's times. ANQWENIQUE WINGFIELD's practice expands these stories into classically-trained performance and who occupies these spaces.

✦ ABOUT WOMEN IN SOUND ✦ Women in Sound is a print zine dedicated to women, queer and trans* people in live and recorded sound.
